Geographical restrictions of owning a credit card

Owning credit cards provides real peace of mind. They are especially important to travelers who oftentimes rely on them in emergency situations or as a protection against carrying around a lot of cash. So, when looking for a versatile and widely accepted credit card it is best to go with cards that have no geographical restrictions. However, in general there are no real geographical restrictions on all the major credit cards – those being Visa, MasterCard and Amex; Although Amex is relatively new to certain areas of the developing world. If you are looking for a credit card with no geographical restrictions then your best bet would be to go with either Visa or MasterCard. Both credit cards are generally accepted everywhere with few exceptions – do not expect to be paying for your supper using a credit card in a village coffee shop in India, it just won’t happen, but in most urban centers there are no real restrictions. The credit cards with geographical restrictions are the retail or gas credit cards that are limited to the company for which they are issued. If that company does not exist in another state or province, then it stands to reason that their credit card will not work in those areas either. Some other relatively big credit cards such as the Discover Card are still not as widely accepted as the major three so there it also has some has definite geographical restrictions. Whatever you decide in a card, you can rest assured that regardless of which big three you choose that at it will be accepted in most places around the world and if it isn’t, then the place down the block will most likely honor it.
